Horseradish and its beneficial properties

Horseradish has many beneficial and medicinal properties, which is why it is often used in folk medicine. The beneficial properties of pureed horseradish last, unfortunately, for no more than a week. Therefore, the jars we buy in stores will most likely never show their beneficial qualities.

Horseradish is able to normalize blood sugar levels, is useful for any infectious diseases, is excellent for gout and rheumatism, and is used in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Japanese scientists claim that chewing a piece of horseradish will help fight tooth decay and other oral diseases. Horseradish phytoncides kill pyogenic bacteria, which means the plant can be used to heal wounds. Fresh horseradish juice has a positive effect on the secretion of gastric juice, which is widely used in the treatment of gastritis with low acidity.

Increased appetite and acidity, improved motor skills occur due to mustard oil, which is part of horseradish. It is also an excellent assistant for diseases of the gallbladder, as it liquefies and “drives” bile. To treat facial neuralgia, frostbite, and rheumatism, poultices of fresh horseradish are used. A water infusion of horseradish is used for baldness and sore throat (gargling). It is also a good diaphoretic. Applying leaves with a warm bandage is an excellent remedy for sciatica, neuralgia, and radiculitis. To treat bruises and dermatomycosis, patches based on grated horseradish are used.

A mixture of horseradish and lemon juice, taken on an empty stomach, 0.5 tsp. twice a day, it is able to dissolve and remove mucus from the body, therefore it is used as an excellent expectorant. This mixture is also an excellent diuretic for swelling and dropsy, it perfectly treats urinary tract diseases, for example, cystitis, and dissolves stones. For the mixture, take 3 lemons and 150 grams of grated horseradish.

Aqueous infusions of horseradish are used for cosmetic purposes to remove age spots and lighten freckles, and are also used for dull skin (in combination with apple). Thus, horseradish is recognized not only by medicine, but also by cosmetology. And chefs simply idolize him. After all, it has a unique taste and smell, and is also an excellent preservative.

Of course, we must not forget that there are also contraindications. It is irritating to the skin and mucous membranes and, if abused, can cause burns. It is also used with caution for certain diseases of the liver, digestive tract, hepatitis, and chronic stomach diseases. Horseradish should not be consumed by people who are overweight, as this plant causes increased appetite. Children's age is also a contraindication. And remember - you need to observe moderation in everything, especially when it comes to health!

The usual recipe for vodka with horseradish

Adding lemon juice to the recipe significantly enhances the properties of the drink, and spices make the taste more rich. Below is the most common and easily accessible recipe, which requires only a trip to the store or market and a week of patience. I have made this recipe several times. It is charming not only for its taste, but also for its simplicity of execution.

  • 500 ml vodka / alcohol 40-50%
  • 1-2 tablespoons of aromatic honey
  • 10 cm horseradish root (medium thickness)
  • 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice

It is very important to use fresh horseradish, because canned horseradish loses its aroma and taste. As for the alcohol base, it is better to use double, for example, sweet distillation, because it can be diluted up to 45% (horseradish will steal a few degrees, and the drink will not be as strong as ours).

But vodka always turns out to be a good refreshing drink. Alcohol is also used, but horseradish prepared with alcohol should last longer.

How to cook:

  1. Horseradish should be peeled and cut into small circles or cubes. You can take a huge grater, but the drink you purchase may turn out to be very “crappy” (which, in general, is not a big deal if you need to quickly overcome a cold).
  2. Place horseradish in a jar, add honey and lemon juice.
  3. Pour everything with a small amount of vodka/alcohol/moonshine and mix well, add the rest. Close the jar and leave in a dark, cool place, leave for 3-4 days, shake several times.
  4. The resulting tincture is filtered through a sieve or several layers of gauze, filtered through cotton or coffee filters and bottled.
  5. Let the drink brew for 3-4 days and consume it with a hearty snack. The resulting horseradish is very soft, with a sweet, crystalline odor, similar to a tear, with a slightly yellow tint.

There are many things you can add to the horseradish setting: mustard berries (1 teaspoon), carrots, ginger (half the volume of horseradish, even the smallest, very popular ingredient), dill, garlic, cinnamon, cloves (2-3 buds), nutmeg (on the tip of a knife), ground pepper (at the rate of 0.25 g of pods per 0.5 vodka), etc.

The main thing is to understand the moderation and remember that the main ingredient is horseradish!

Recipes for specialized horseradish tincture

Some versions of horseradish and vodka tincture have special properties. They are used to treat specific diseases, but in other cases they also show positive results.

  • Kidney and gallstones, colds. We take horseradish leaves and fill liter jars with them, but do not stuff them. Pour vodka or diluted alcohol into containers and close with nylon lids. Let it sit for 7 days and strain. The medicine should be taken 1-2 tablespoons 3-4 times a day.
  • Cleansing the stomach, liver and lungs. Place two horseradish leaves and one root, cut into four parts, into a glass jar. Fill the product with vodka, close the lid and leave for 7 days. After the specified time, the composition should appear greenish. The product is taken one tablespoon in the morning and evening before meals.
  • Increased potency in men. Take 0.5 kg of peeled horseradish roots and grind them using a meat grinder or blender. Place the mixture in a liter jar and fill it to the top with vodka (can be replaced with water). Mix the mixture, close the lid and leave for 7 days in a dark room. After the specified time, transfer the product to a larger jar, add 0.5 kg of liquid honey and the juice of 2 lemons. Mix everything again and leave for another 7 days.
