How to infuse moonshine on bark - recipes and tips

Oak moonshine is a special product; it has excellent characteristics and is often used by distillers as a basis for creating cognac or other noble drink. But before you start preparing this base, you should:

Select raw materials. We are talking not only about the moonshine itself, but also about the bark. Pharmacy shelves are literally littered with various herbs that can easily be used in moonshine. At the same time, it is unlikely that you will be able to surprise a pharmacist with oak bark, but before choosing a product, you should also inquire about its quality. Before you start creating a tincture, you should check the raw materials for suitability, remove unnecessary debris, etc. Tincture made from oak bark is afraid of light, for this reason it is worth placing the drink in a cool and, most importantly, dark place with a stable temperature. The ideal option would be a cellar or attic.

It is also worth paying attention to the container into which the distillate will be immersed for further refinement. Glass is preferred

Storing alcohol in glass is convenient and practical, and if the glass is darkened, it is safe.

Recipe No. 1

Moonshine tincture on oak bark, ingredients and method of preparation:

  • 3 liters of moonshine with a strength of 46 degrees;
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar, you can replace it with honey or caramel;
  • 3 tablespoons of oak bark;
  • 4–6 sprigs of cloves;
  • 10 peppercorns;
  • a little vanillin and coriander on the tip of a knife;
  • St. John's wort and oregano, 25–35 grams of each ingredient.

We select a container and wash it thoroughly using a biological dishwashing detergent to avoid any foreign odors. Then we dry the container with a towel and pour all the ingredients into it.

Mix the mixture thoroughly with a spoon or wooden spatula until the mixture is homogeneous. Then fill everything with moonshine and close the container with a tight lid.

After approximately 14–16 days, you can taste the drink: if its taste suits you, then you need to filter the alcohol. We make our own filter from gauze and cotton wool or use any thick fabric, flannel will do.

You will have to filter several times. If the taste of the drink seems sharp, you can soften it by adding a little honey or sugar to the distillate. Just add sugar or honey to the moonshine, shake it and put it in the refrigerator for 12 days.

This drink will decorate any table; it goes well with chocolate, desserts or meat dishes.

Recipe No. 2

Another recipe is not particularly complicated; it can be called primitive. Because to prepare the tincture, you only need 3 components:

  • moonshine - 6 liters, strength 45 degrees;
  • oak bark - 200 grams;
  • sugar or honey - 60–70 grams.

You can add lemon zest to the recipe if you wish. After 10 days, we pass the product through the filter several times, squeeze out the sediment and pour the drink into bottles.

If after tasting the alcohol it seems that its taste is sharp or bitter, you can add a little more sugar to the distillate. This will help soften the taste of moonshine and make it more pleasant.

The final stage can be considered the spill. We distribute the tincture into bottles and place them in the refrigerator for 3–5 days to stabilize the taste and aroma.

Instead of oak bark, you can use a decoction. If you dilute moonshine with it, the drink will turn out quite good, but such alcohol can hardly be called elite.

Tannins and aromatic substances are contained not only in wood, but also in oak bark. The easiest way is to buy the material at the pharmacy, in the herbal remedies department, but the prepared one yourself smells much stronger, which means that cognac made with moonshine with oak bark will be of better quality.

Tincture with vodka, moonshine and oak bark

Homemade oak bark tincture is very similar in smell to cognac. It takes very little time to prepare it. Several additional herbs and spices are used in the composition of this tincture, including: cloves, pepper, oregano, coriander, St. John's wort. All these components are used to taste and are not included in the required composition of the oak bark tincture.

Main Ingredients

  • 2 liters of moonshine or vodka (40 degrees)
  • 2 tablespoons oak bark
  • half a tablespoon of honey

The classic recipe for oak liqueur with vodka without additional spices has a sharper monotonous smell and not everyone may like such a strong accent that oak bark gives to the drink.

The preparation of the tincture is not mediocre. Oak bark is poured into the bottom of the container (optionally a 3-liter glass jar) and filled with moonshine or vodka. Add honey, herbs and spices (optional) and mix thoroughly, then cover with a lid. Infuse the drink for 2 weeks at room temperature in a place protected from light, periodically shaking the sediment at the bottom of the jar. After 2 weeks, we pass the tincture through a filter, clearing it of sediment (it is better to do this several times with varying degrees of purification, using gauze and cotton wool in the very last case), and pour it into bottles. This is how easy it is to prepare a tincture using moonshine or vodka from oak bark at home.

Contraindications and possible harm

Before taking oak bark tincture, study the conditions for using this product. It has a number of contraindications:

  • gastrointestinal diseases in the acute phase;
  • allergic reaction;
  • liver or kidney failure.

Contraindications to oak bark infusion also apply to the period of use of this product: do not use it for more than 2 weeks.

Long-term use of the drink can lead to vomiting, poor sense of smell, and yellow teeth.

Use quality raw materials. If the alcohol tincture on the oak bark becomes cloudy, it is not suitable for treatment.

Homemade drink

Since you need to properly infuse moonshine on oak chips for a long time, you can stock up on several containers to simultaneously prepare tinctures using natural materials according to different recipes and with different ingredients. It is worth preparing the necessary materials and tools in advance.

Already pre-soaked and fried wood chips, ready for infusion

It is preferable to infuse moonshine on oak chips using a product distilled from grape raw materials.

This should bring the final product significantly closer to the original obtained from an oak barrel, not only in its brown color, but also in its characteristic aroma. If this is not possible, then the tincture is made from moonshine prepared using the following types of mash:

  • on grain;
  • on sugar;
  • on fruits or berries.

Gourmets assure that the final products will show, to a small or medium extent, the original quality of the raw materials. You shouldn't skimp on it.

It is necessary to provide the product with all stages of distillation and purification before the oak chips at the final stage end up in a container with homemade alcohol. At the final stage, the liquid should not contain harmful components, which include aldehydes, fusel components, particles of dissolved pulp, etc.

Only having the purest possible initial product will the tincture of moonshine on oak chips be closest in characteristics to cognac or brandy.

The closest taste to real cognac can be obtained only if you use purified double-distilled moonshine.

The use of chopped particles in the form of slivers or oak chips for a drink instead of a barrel at home is often not critical, since caring for a wooden container, including its storage and processing, is a rather labor-intensive process if all procedures are followed. It will be possible to compensate for some of the disadvantages of using split sticks by increasing the infusion time and high-quality preparation of the material.

Important information

To figure out how long to infuse moonshine on oak chips, you need to understand the chemical processes that occur during this stage. They can occur at different speeds depending on the specific initial conditions.

It is worth understanding the following factors:

  • Due to the peculiarity of its structure, oak chips for moonshine with a high degree of purification are an adsorbent. Through the capillaries in the wood, chemical compounds with a low boiling point are quickly absorbed, which practically cannot be eliminated during the distillation process. These components include aldehydes.

Wood, due to its structure, also acts as an adsorbent - absorbing all harmful components like a sponge.

The tincture, aged for several years with bark or chips, is a remarkably refined product that resembles good quality cognac.

  • An infusion of moonshine on oak chips will taste much softer than pure distillate or raw alcohol. This is due to the fact that in the process of interaction of ethanol with natural biochemical substances, the liquid becomes saturated with aromatic and tannic components, which, on the one hand, soften the taste, and on the other, endow it with a unique combination of different aromatic and flavor notes.
  • Even from a medical point of view, such infusion of moonshine allows you to obtain a liquid with healing properties. This will be possible without the involvement of pharmacological laboratories. Moderate consumption of the resulting drink can have a positive effect on the body.

Homemade cognac, prepared according to all the rules, is practically a medicine - it allows the body to more effectively fight inflammatory processes and bacteria.

Consumption can be carried out either in pure form or by adding small portions to other drinks, for example, coffee.

Characteristics of harvested wood raw materials

Do not underestimate the quality of the raw materials used. In order to fully refine a homemade drink, it is necessary to select high-quality wood, both in the form of a vessel (barrel) and in the form of a filler (chips, shavings or chips).

The best result is obtained under conditions where wooden containers made from wood grown on depleted soils and in fairly arid climatic conditions were used. Otherwise, the prepared brandy, whiskey or cognac will be oversaturated with tannins. Their excess will negatively affect the organoleptic properties.

The process technology may include the production of a cognac drink using one of the types of wooden donors for alcohol:

Bark

If you use exclusively the bark of centuries-old trees, the tincture will be bitter with a slightly softened taste. A little red tint will be added to brown tones. Such a liquid will contain a lot of tannin - the basis of the tannic flavor, which contains a considerable amount of medicinal properties. Overexposure to the tincture will result in excess bitterness.

wood chips

Its addition will significantly increase the taste of alcohol, providing the release of some elements and drawing out harmful substances. You can prepare it yourself or purchase a sufficient batch at a pharmacy or a specialized store for distillers. It is pre-cooked and fried, and at the end of the specified period, the liquid will be amber in color with a subtle oak taste. If you follow the technology, you will be able to achieve light notes of smoke and the aroma of prunes.

Barrel

An expensive, classic option for making homemade cognac will provide the best purification of the liquid.

Settling is carried out over several years. At this time, the chemical composition becomes balanced.

The disadvantage of this option is the limited validity period. On average, the barrel method is designed for 5-7 cycles, after which you will have to purchase new containers.

The best recipes for moonshine with oak chips

The most affordable version of the product uses 20 g of oak chips per liter of moonshine. It is preferable to pour in a purified product, the strength of which will be in the range of 45-50°. This is necessary in order to ultimately obtain approximately a forty-degree liquid, since part of the ethanol will dissolve in the raw material.
