Edema is an excessive accumulation of fluid in the body tissues, subcutaneous tissue. Edema is a symptom of heart disease, complicated by heart failure, kidney disease, and can be observed with liver cirrhosis, starvation, and pregnancy pathology. To cure swelling, you need to treat the underlying disease against which it appeared.
Get rid of swelling with folk remedies:
Birch leaves for swelling on the legs.
If your feet are swollen, take fresh, preferably not very old, birch leaves. Chop them finely to make a glass. Pour 1 liter of boiling water over them, add 1 tablespoon of salt. Leave for half an hour. And then apply compresses to your legs with this infusion 5-6 times a day. After such procedures, swelling subsides quickly, and the legs return to normal. For swelling, take an infusion of birch leaves. It helps with both renal and cardiac edema. But you need spring leaves, young ones, because summer ones are no longer so healthy, toxic substances can accumulate in them. Finely chop 100 g of leaves and then pour in 2 cups of warm boiled water. In order not to destroy everything useful, do not pour boiling water over the leaves - just warm water. Leave to brew for 5-6 hours, then strain and squeeze. Let the resulting infusion sit until a sediment appears. We don’t need it, so after settling, pour the infusion to get rid of sediment. Take half a glass of infusion 3 times a day before meals. Your swelling will go away.
Foot baths for swelling
Baths are a remedy that quickly eliminates swelling and has no contraindications. Recipes for the most effective baths:
- From the herbal mixture, which includes chamomile, birch leaves and mint, you should make a strong decoction (2 tablespoons per 1 liter of water), and then add it to a container with warm water. The procedure should be done before bed for 10-15 minutes. The optimal course duration is 2 weeks.
- A glass of sage needs to be filled with 1 liter of boiling water. Strain after 10 minutes. Do the procedure for 10-15 minutes.
- 50 grams of grape leaves should be poured with 3 liters of boiling water and left for 10-15 minutes. The duration of the procedure is 15 minutes. This bath will strengthen the walls of blood vessels on the legs, which is important for varicose veins.
- Mix 100 grams of juniper and sea salt with 2 teaspoons of baking soda, and then pour in a liter of boiling water. The resulting solution must be diluted with water until a comfortable temperature is reached. You need to steam your lower limbs for 20 minutes. After the procedure, you should wear wool socks. The decoction can be improved with the following additional ingredients (depending on the cause of edema):
- iodine – prevents the development of mycosis;
- celandine – fights muscle tension;
- laundry soap - destroys fungal microflora and softens calluses.
- A salt bath perfectly relieves swelling caused by wearing tight shoes, and provides an antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and relaxing effect. To prepare a medicinal solution, you need to mix 1 tablespoon of sea salt and 1 liter of boiling water. Add 300 ml of cold water to the resulting solution. Salt baths can be taken daily.
- Grapefruit essential oil has a powerful anti-inflammatory and decongestant effect. Mix a few drops with warm water and soak your feet for 10-15 minutes. You can also add the product to olive oil and rub the resulting mixture into swollen limbs.
Another popular folk method of getting rid of swelling of the legs is an air bath. Its essence is to free your feet from shoes and perform a therapeutic relaxing massage for 10-15 minutes. After the procedure, you should lie down with a cushion under your feet and spend at least 20 minutes in this position. The final step is to rinse your feet with cold water and apply moisturizer.
Parsley for swelling.
You will need the whole fresh parsley plant, including the root. Wash thoroughly and pass through a meat grinder. You should end up with a glass of this green mass. Transfer it to a thermos and pour 0.5 liters of boiling water. Leave overnight. In the morning, strain and squeeze. Add the juice of one lemon to the resulting infusion. You need to drink all the liquid per day in 3 doses. You can take the infusion regardless of food. Be sure to take it 2 days in a row. Then take a break for 3 days and repeat the 2-day treatment again. You will immediately notice that fluid has begun to leave the body, that swelling disappears.
Lingonberries will relieve swelling.
For swelling of the legs, it is advisable to take lingonberry leaf extract (3 times a day, half a glass before meals). This extract also has a significant anti-inflammatory effect, which is enhanced in an alkaline environment. To create an alkaline environment in the stomach, before taking lingonberry leaves, you can drink half a glass of alkaline mineral water (for example, Borjomi) or at least a solution of baking soda (1 teaspoon per glass). — In order to prevent potassium from being washed out of the body when taking a diuretic, you need to include foods with a high potassium content in your diet (baked potatoes, cabbage, dried apricots, beans). - When edema appears, it is useful to eat as many vegetables, herbs, fruits and berries as possible, which have a diuretic effect, such as celery, parsley, onions, garlic, watermelons, pumpkin, black currants, grapes, as well as dairy products - kefir, curdled milk, cottage cheese. Instead of regular tea and drinks, it is useful to drink infusions and decoctions of medicinal plants.
Diuretic herbs during pregnancy
Swelling during pregnancy is common. They appear in the second and third trimester, when the fetus is actively growing, the load on the limbs increases, and blood flow through the vessels worsens. To eliminate them, doctors recommend using medicinal decoctions.

But diuretic herbs during pregnancy are not so easy to choose, because many natural diuretics can negatively affect the health of the embryo and the expectant mother. The presented list of diuretic herbs will help you avoid these problems. They are optimal and even useful for pregnant women:
- Cranberry.
Cranberry juice will help a pregnant woman not only get rid of edema, but also increase immunity, improve the functioning of the heart muscle and tone up.
To prepare a healthy drink, puree 400 g of cranberries and drain the juice. Pour 1 liter of water over the crushed berries and boil. After 30 minutes, strain, add cranberry juice and 4-5 tbsp. l. sugar or honey.
Drink fruit juice throughout the day, except in the evening, otherwise you will have a sleepless night.
- Chicory.
Chicory is a good tonic and removes excess water from the body, improves kidney function.
During pregnancy, make a decoction of crushed chicory root. 1 tbsp. l. natural remedy, pour 1 liter of hot water and boil over low heat for 10 minutes. Cool and strain.
The therapeutic dose is 1/3 cup. Take the product three times a day.
- Peppermint.
Mint is famous for its relaxing and sleep-inducing effects. But it is also a strong diuretic. It can be mixed with regular green or black tea. For this, 1 tbsp is enough. l. for 300 ml hot water. You can take this tea throughout the day, but not at night.
Mint as a diuretic works great in combination with lingonberry leaves and corn silk. Take 1 tbsp. l. these herbs, pour 0.5 liters of hot water and leave to infuse for 6 hours. Then strain and drink 150–200 ml three times a day.

- Orthosiphon.
Orthosiphon is a strong diuretic. Therefore, use it in critical cases and only on the recommendation of a doctor. Kidney tea is made from it. For this, ½ tsp. pour 1 glass of boiling water, leave for 20 minutes, filter, add water and drink half an hour before meals. This tea is also effective for enhancing lactation.
The choice of diuretic herbs for pregnant women is limited. In addition to those described, you can safely use linden leaves and flowers, birch buds and leaves, and chamomile. But it is better to avoid decoctions of horsetail, bears ears (bearberry), nettle, juniper, strawberry leaves and berries.
Knotweed is an excellent remedy for swelling.
An infusion of Polygonum (water pepper) is drunk for swelling, 1 tbsp. spoon 3 times a day before meals. It is prepared like this: 1 tbsp. pour a spoonful of herbs into 1 glass of hot water, keep in a water bath for 15 minutes, filter. The resulting infusion is diluted with boiled water to its original volume.
Horsetail for swelling.
1 tbsp. a spoonful of crushed horsetail herb is brewed with 2 cups of boiling water, left for 2 hours, filtered. Take 2-3 tbsp. spoons 5-6 times a day. Check out the contraindications. Course - 3 weeks.
Carrot tops will help with swelling.
Carrot tops will help with kidney disease and swelling. The tops must be well dried and crushed. And it’s easy to use: pour a tablespoon of raw material with a glass of boiling water and leave for half an hour. You should drink the infusion half a glass 3 times a day. This is a real balm for the kidneys. The infusion will cleanse them, remove excess fluid, and also improve cardiac activity.
Dried apricots and dill for swelling.
An infusion of dried apricots or dill will relieve swelling. Rinse dried fruits with warm water, chop, pour boiling water, leave for 6 hours in a closed enamel container. For hidden swelling, take 100 g of dried fruit per 1 liter of water, for obvious swelling - up to 200 g. If you want to sweeten your drink, it is better to take honey or fructose rather than sugar
Traditional herbal recipes
All folk remedies in the form of herbal preparations do not replace medicinal diuretics, but are used as an addition to them.
- In equal parts, take birch buds, bearberry and lingonberry leaves, and dried juniper berries. The mixture is brewed as usual - a spoonful in a glass of boiling water. Take half a glass before meals. The collection is good for poor kidney function.
- Pour a spoonful of flaxseed into a liter of boiling water and leave, covered, in a thermos, for an hour. Drink half a glass every two hours during the day.
- Brew a spoonful of dried parsley leaves in two glasses of boiling water, leave for half an hour and strain. Drink the infusion three times a day.
- Pour a glass of boiling water over a spoonful of dill seeds and leave in a water bath for 15 minutes. Strain and drink half a glass before meals.
- Mix sage leaves, plantain and anise seeds in equal parts. Brew a spoon into a glass of boiling water, drink half a glass three times a day.
- Mix strawberry leaves with birch leaves, flaxseed and nettle, also in equal parts. Brew according to the classic method, take half a glass before meals.
- Pour 2 tablespoons of birch leaves into a thermos with half a liter of boiling water and leave for three hours. Drink three times a day, before meals.
- For swelling in pregnant women, pour boiling water over a handful of dried apricots, leave for 8 hours and drink as tea.
During pregnancy, some herbs can provoke premature birth, so it is better not to take them.
Why does swelling deserve attention?
It seemed that an eye, or a leg, or an arm was slightly swollen... well, why worry? “Tomorrow” will definitely pass.

Parsley combined with green tea is also an excellent home remedy for swelling. To prepare it, parsley is mixed with dry tea leaves in equal proportions, and the resulting mixture is poured with a small amount of hot water. Leave for 10-15 minutes before use. Apply to eyelids for 10-15 minutes.
