The main difference between bedstraw and other plants is the small yellow or white flowers collected in bunches.

The flowers attract bees with their sweet honey scent. The herb contains unique elements, thanks to which the plant has a healing effect.

The leaves, flowers and roots of bedstraw are used in the treatment of various diseases.

Features of a medicinal plant

Bedstraw is soft. It differs from other species by small spines on the leaves. Grass grows in meadows and slopes.

The plant contains substances similar in structure and effects to hormones: flavonoids, glycosides, iridoids. Tenacious bedstraw also contains vitamins K, C and minerals - copper, strontium, zinc, iron. The medicinal effects of the plant are as follows:

  • choleretic;
  • diuretic;
  • antispasmodic;
  • pain reliever;

The plant has high astringent properties due to the content of a special organic substance - tannin.

The most commonly used are decoctions and infusions of bedstraw. The powder of the plant is used in folk medicine. It can also be used to prepare various ointments for external use.

Are there any harms and contraindications?

It is worth considering that bedstraw, despite all its benefits, is a poisonous plant. So, sheep and goats that overate this plant often died. For humans, the danger is much less, but, nevertheless, it is worth observing the dosages of medications and following the recommendations of a specialist, otherwise negative consequences are possible.

Bedstraw-based products should not be used by pregnant and lactating women, children under 12 years of age, those suffering from hypertension and diabetes, as well as cancer patients if the level of leukocytes decreases to less than 4 per 10*9 liters.

Many people recognize the yellow panicles of the flowering bedstraw grass from afar by their pleasant honey aroma. Herbalists talk about the sedative, analgesic, antiseptic and restorative effects of the plant on the human body. Finding healing raw materials is not difficult, as is preparing medicine from it.

Society has an ambiguous attitude towards the plant. Some consider it a medicine, while others consider it a deadly poison. To understand the true qualities of the real bedstraw, let’s analyze its chemical composition. According to laboratory studies, all parts of the perennial contain:

  • essential oils - act as natural filters, cleansing the body of toxins and waste;
  • flavonoids—regulate the permeability of the walls of blood vessels, promoting their elasticity;
  • tannins - have an astringent, rejuvenating and restorative effect;
  • glycosides are unstable substances that, when heated, break down into sugars and aglycones and have a laxative effect;
  • steroid saponins are complex nitrogen-free organic compounds whose specific properties are the ability to form foam;
  • Coumarins are prohibited in the food and cosmetic industries of many progressive countries; they cause allergic dermatitis, cancer and severe intoxication;
  • asperuloside;
  • iridoids;
  • citric and gallotanninic acids;
  • carotene (a form of vitamin A);
  • ascorbic acid (vitamin C);
  • rubber;
  • iron;
  • magnesium;
  • copper;
  • zinc;
  • nickel;
  • molybdenum;
  • thallium;
  • gallium;
  • strontium;
  • chromium;
  • vanadium;
  • coloring matter.

Bedstraw therapy does not always result in the expected cure. The herb can cause colossal harm to the body if it is used incorrectly and without seeking the advice of specialists.

Do not forget about the presence of harmful coumarins in the perennial composition, which in the United States of America are considered the worst enemies of the human body. Due to the presence of these substances, the plant is poisonous. Consequently, this herb is strictly contraindicated for children, pregnant women and women during lactation. Allergy sufferers suffering from diabetes and urolithiasis should also be wary of it.

It is obvious that yellow bedstraw is not at all a panacea for all common diseases; its medicinal properties and contraindications are balanced.

Spreading

This plant is widely represented in the central part of our country. In addition, it is found in Western and Eastern Siberia, Moldova and Central Asia, Sakhalin and Ukraine, and the Caucasus.

Geographically, tenacious bedstraw grows in western Russia, western and eastern Siberia, Sakhalin, Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova, the Caucasus and Central Asia. Since the plant is a weed, it is found everywhere and grows in any conditions - wastelands, forest plantations, fields, forests, landfills, rocky slopes, along roads, iron embankments and river banks. It grows more actively in moist, fertile soils.

What it looks like and where it grows

In the botanical descriptions of scientific sources, bedstraw (Galium verum) is presented as a tenacious perennial herb with straight, fragile stems. It develops upward from 60 to 120 centimeters and often takes root when the sprouts come into contact with the soil.

If there are no upright growing plants near the bedstraw, its stems will lie on the ground, slightly raising the tops.

In the first half of summer, bedstraw blooms, throwing out long, paniculate, pyramidal peduncles. Its small, bright yellow flowers barely reach 3 mm in diameter, but have a highly concentrated aroma and form a dense inflorescence.

You can see the plant on dry lands, sunny meadows and roadsides in Eurasia. It has also naturalized in the northern regions of the United States of America, Canada and New Zealand. In Ukraine, this plant is widespread in all regions and is not at all rare.

Among the people, the herb is often called “breast grass”, “honey madder”, “goose grass”, “worm grass”, “honey plant”. Botanists, in turn, attribute the species to the extensive genus Bedstraw, which is part of the Madder family.

The grass of bedstraw is widespread on the territory of the Eurasian continent. This plant is also found in our country. It grows in all regions of Eastern and Western Siberia and the Far East. And also in countries neighboring Russia - in Belarus, Central Asia, the Caucasus and Ukraine.

According to one version, the name of the plant comes from the word “mar”, which in some Russian regions means low-lying wetland. Although bedstraw does not grow directly in swamps, it is often found near them, in a humid environment. It can also be found in dry areas - in meadows, clearings, along roads and paths.

Collection and preparation

Harvesting the raw materials of tenacious bedstraw is quite simple: the flowering part (about 30-35 cm), which is located at the top, is cut off with scissors. The leaves are carefully torn off. Then the raw materials are laid out on paper or fabric under a canopy or in a room with low humidity. It is necessary to shake the grass of the tenacious bedstraw at least twice a day. The finished raw materials are placed in paper or fabric bags.

In the summer - from July to August - P. tenacious goes through a flowering period. It is at this time that the plant needs to be harvested. The necessary material is the upper part of the plant and occasionally the root.

You need to measure about 30 cm from the top of the plant where the flowers have opened and carefully cut it off. Next, remove the leaves, leaving only the stem and flowers. The raw materials are placed, wrapped in thin cloth or paper and left in a dark, dry place until completely dry. Once a day, the grass needs to be shaken, and when it is completely dry, put it in fabric bags.

The roots are prepared at the end of the flowering period, in the fall, in September. It is necessary to dig up the plant, clean it well, wash the roots and dry it.

All collected plant materials can be stored for no longer than a year.

The best time for this procedure is when the weed enters the flowering phase. All its parts are suitable for medicinal purposes. The main thing is to collect them away from dusty roads and manufacturing plants.

In dry weather throughout the summer, you can cut off the stems and flower stalks of the plant. They are usually dried in attics. It is important that the grass is not exposed to direct sunlight, the room is dry and warm, and good ventilation is also necessary. It is also advisable to dig up the roots at the peak of the vegetative development of the perennial.

Dry raw materials can be immediately crushed through a coffee grinder and stored in powder form in a closed glass container, or the herb can be placed in fabric bags.

The place for storing medicinal herbs should not be damp.

True bedstraw, the medicinal properties and contraindications of which will be described below, must be harvested during flowering, starting at the end of May and ending at the beginning of September. The roots can be dug up all summer. All parts of the plant are collected, including the rhizome. In this case, the woody stems are not touched.

The most valuable for medicinal use are flowers and herbs. The panicles are dried in a well-ventilated room. You can also carry out this process outdoors, in a dark place - if the weather permits. It should not be hot, with a light breeze.

In order for the inflorescences to dry evenly, it is necessary to distribute them in a thin layer on sheets of paper or on scraps of natural fabric. From time to time they need to be tossed and turned over.

There is another way: to form bunches of flowers, tie them in several pieces and hang them by hooking them on a hook or attaching them to a rope with clothespins. Ready-to-use raw materials are stored for three years. Sometimes fresh grass is pressed, and the resulting juice is diluted with alcohol - thus increasing the shelf life. Bedstraw grass has a bitter, astringent taste.
