Treatment of vertebral hernia with folk remedies, revealing the secrets

The article contains the best methods of traditional treatment for hernia of the lumbar spine. Lumbar hernia often appears in men over 30 years of age. This is a dangerous disease that is accompanied by severe pain and, when neglected, leads to serious consequences.

Treatment of a hernia of the lumbar spine with folk remedies is available to many patients; the main thing is to consult with your doctor before doing so.

A lumbar hernia is a protrusion of the nucleus pulposus of the intervertebral disc, which compresses the nerve roots in the spinal canal. A hernia in the lower back is observed in 90% of cases of all back diseases due to the high load on the lumbar region, as well as the consequences of osteochondrosis.

What does a hernia look like?

Surgery can be avoided; there are many treatment methods. These include exercises for the spine, physiotherapy and, of course, traditional medicine recipes. Using all treatment methods in combination will completely cure the hernia. If you have been diagnosed with a herniated disc, do not despair! Anyone can overcome a spinal hernia without surgery!

In the article we will talk in detail about the treatment of lumbar hernia using folk remedies such as applications, ointments, compresses and tinctures.

Signs and symptoms

The nature of the symptoms of the disease directly depends on the location and size of the hernia. What are the main signs and symptoms of this dangerous disease? These include:

  1. severe pain in the lumbar region, which intensifies when turning and bending;
  2. numbness of the lower extremities, especially the big toe;
  3. a feeling of goosebumps and wobbliness in the legs;
  4. sudden and acute pain in the back (lumbago);
  5. decreased potency in men;
  6. legs dragging appears;
  7. problems with bowel movements and urination;
  8. paralysis of the lower limbs.

Do you have any of these symptoms? They may be constant or occur periodically. If signs of a hernia appear, we advise you not to delay visiting a doctor. People suffering from lumbar hernia are rarely scheduled for surgery. And in fact, it is only required in 5-10% of cases.

Remember! Lumbar herniation of the spine is a serious disease that can put you in a wheelchair.

A lumbar hernia can lead to paralysis of the lower extremities

Indications for surgical treatment of the disease

  • pain lasts more than six months;
  • the appearance of spondylolisthesis is a displacement of the spinal discs;
  • urination problems, intestinal problems;
  • lack of potency in men;
  • paralysis of the lower limbs.

If you do not have the listed signs, then you can get rid of the hernia using conservative methods.

Treatment with traditional methods in combination with medications gives a high positive result.

Non-surgical treatment of lower back hernia

Treatment of lumbar intervertebral hernia without surgery is quite possible, the main thing is to find competent specialists who can accurately determine the cause of the hernia and at what stage of the disease the patient is. Depending on this, each patient will receive an individual treatment plan. There are now many treatments available for these patients.

Treatment of intervertebral hernia without surgery during an exacerbation period primarily involves providing the patient with bed rest.

To relieve pain, medications are usually used. Non-steroidal drugs are often used as anti-inflammatory drugs; they relieve inflammation and swelling. Due to this, the pain syndrome is reduced. These medicines come in different forms, tablets are prescribed for not very severe pain, and injections are prescribed if the pain becomes unbearable.

But, like many medications, they have side effects and, with long-term use, can negatively affect the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract.

Treatment of a vertebral hernia without surgery is not limited to taking painkillers. When it is possible to relieve acute inflammation with medications and eliminate pain, you can move on to the next stage of treatment. Since only the symptoms were relieved, but the hernia itself did not go away, the body will have to adapt to it. In order to help him with this, various techniques are used.

Now there are a large number of clinics offering treatment for spinal hernia of the lumbar spine without surgery. Effective and proven methods are exercise therapy (a set of therapeutic exercises) for the treatment of intervertebral hernia and general massage. Among the modern techniques used are the following:

  • acupuncture;
  • manual therapy;
  • laser therapy.

Treatment of lumbosacral hernia can either combine these methods together or use them separately, depending on which are most effective for a particular patient.

Thanks to these procedures, it is possible to tone muscles that have weakened, relax those that are in spasm, and improve the functioning of the muscle corset. This is all necessary to prevent relapse of the disease or its occurrence in new areas of the spine.

How to cure a hernia with folk remedies

If positive results appear during treatment with folk remedies - a decrease in pain and swelling, then do not stop treatment under any circumstances! Treat for at least 3 months and then see a doctor to find out the progress of improvement. All of the methods listed below also apply to cervical and thoracic hernia.

To cope with acute pain in the initial stage of a hernia, the following types of treatment are suitable:

  • acupuncture;
  • hirudotherapy;
  • spinal traction;
  • traditional medicine recipes;
  • Exercise therapy, etc.

Hirudotherapy - treatment with leeches
To prevent the appearance and development of the disease, follow the following treatment options:

  • yoga;
  • physiotherapy;
  • proper nutrition;
  • other treatments that will strengthen the spine.

In total, there are the following types of treatment using traditional methods:

  • tinctures;
  • applications;
  • ointments;
  • rubbing;
  • compresses;
  • applicator Lyapko and Kuznetsov.

Medicines come to the rescue

The most obvious treatment option is medication. However, this can be done strictly under the supervision of a doctor, since self-treatment in this way can lead to many negative consequences.

First of all, patients with a hernia are recommended to take non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as Diclofenac, Nimesulide, Piroxicam, Indomethacin and others. They will help reduce swelling and relieve pain for a while. Such medications can be taken either in the form of tablets or in the form of injections, depending on the patient’s body and the intensity of the pain experienced.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are an excellent method for relieving pain and restoring the ability to fully engage in treatment

Most often, these drugs are taken so that the patient can carry out a full course of treatment. They do not cure the disease; it is only a temporary measure. Moreover, their constant use may cause addiction. If you decide to take medications, then you should carry out other procedures at the same time.

  1. Perform asanas carefully, slowly and carefully;
  2. If pain intensifies during asana, exercises should be avoided;
  3. Do yoga exercises at least three times during the day;
  4. Gradually increase the load;
  5. Regular exercise will achieve a healing effect.

There are exercises aimed at different parts of the spine. The “bridge” will relieve tension from the neck and chest area. “Cobra” relieves tension from the lumbar region.

Diaphragmatic breathing

With the help of breathing techniques you can significantly reduce back pain. To do this, take the coachman's position or any position that is comfortable for you. Next, begin to rhythmically move your stomach, while trying not to involve your chest.

Difficulties may arise at first, but over time the abdominal muscles will begin to work. You can breathe for 5-10 minutes a day, depending on your condition.

The therapeutic effect of exercise is achieved by saturating cells and tissues with negatively charged oxygen, which has an antioxidant effect on the body.

Treatment with cold and heat

You can apply cold and heat to the sore spot. Use a regular heating pad for this. Pour cold water into one, warm water into the other. Lie on the bed with a heating pad filled with warm water under your back at the level of the painful area. After an hour and a half, repeat the procedure with cold water.

The therapeutic effect is based on the fact that heat has a relaxing effect on the blood vessels approaching the disc, and cold has a constricting effect. Due to this, the circulatory system is activated and the patient’s condition improves.

Epsom salt

Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate) are a common remedy that relieves pain and inflammation. You can take a bath with Epsom salts. Magnesium sulfate is sold in pharmacies in 20 g bags. You will need to purchase 15-20 bags and add the salt to a bath filled with hot water.

Kuznetsov applicator

This medical product is used to relieve pain from a herniated disc. It looks like a piece of flexible material with a large number of plastic round plates, on which there are many plastic needles. The principle of operation is that applying pressure to the skin with the applicator relieves pain and tension and improves blood circulation. It is effective against lumbago and back fatigue.

We read an excellent article that talks about the benefits of the applicator: The healing power of the Kuznetsov applicator for osteochondrosis

Applicator Lyapko

Lyapko applicator
Available in different forms, the base is a rubber material on which there are metal needles. It has a stronger effect than the Kuznetsov applicator. Therapeutic exercise for treatment and prevention

At home, we recommend doing therapeutic exercises to get rid of the symptoms of a herniated disc. The main thing to remember is that if severe or acute pain appears during exercise, exercise should be stopped immediately.

When practicing exercise therapy, the distance between the vertebrae increases, which helps eliminate pain. Also, exercises are very helpful in strengthening the muscular frame and improving the mobility of the spine. Physical therapy is recommended for those who have long had problems with a lumbar hernia.

Yoga is also very effective, but you should consult your doctor to determine which exercises you can do.

The most effective exercises for spinal hernia:

  1. Performed on all fours. Place your hands on the floor. You just need to walk on your knees for a few minutes with your back straight. Exercise improves blood circulation and elasticity of the spine;
  2. The starting position is also on all fours. Keep your back straight. At the same time, you need to raise your right arm and left leg, freeze in this position for 5 seconds. Repeat with the other arm and leg. Perform 10-15 times;
  3. Starting position – lie on your back, arms extended along the body, legs bent at the knees. Raise the pelvis of the body up a little, other parts of the body should be motionless. Freeze in this position for as long as possible, then relax your body and muscles. Repeat 10-15 times;
  4. Lie on your back, legs should be straight. Stretch your feet forward as much as possible, and reach your chin towards your chest. Repeat 10-15 times.
  5. Starting position – lying on your back, legs straight. The socks should be pulled forward as much as possible, and the chin should be pulled towards the chest. Repeat 10-15 times.

Treatment with folk and conservative remedies

Medications are prescribed by a doctor and exclude complex surgery, which is not always indicated, and is also not always desirable if palliative methods can be used. Medical practice shows that no more than 8-10% of patients with spinal hernia actually need radical surgery.

Age-related adverse changes may not occur if

  • There were no spinal injuries, no problems with it among parents, no excessive physical activity (whether in sports or work), aggravated by poor nutrition
  • There was no protrusion (second stage of intervertebral hernia) due to acquired osteochondrosis.
  • Since childhood, correct everyday posture and the correct position when working while sitting have been formed.

Time-tested folk remedies for intervertebral hernia can play a significant role in treatment, along with special exercises and the most modern medications.

Spinal traction in the treatment of hernia

This procedure is an effective method for eliminating lower back pain. There are many opponents of this method, since traction can damage the fibrous ring in the spine and the lining of the joints.

If we take into account that diseases of the spine occur in most cases in older people, then it is necessary to undergo a full range of examinations in order to perform this procedure. It is forbidden to stretch the spine in case of osteochondrosis, radiculitis and other degenerative-dystrophic diseases of the spine. In this case, another spinal hernia may appear.

Very often, traction is prescribed during the recovery period after spinal injuries.

How does underwater spinal traction occur?

The procedure is performed in a horizontal or vertical position of the body. Types of spinal traction:

  • inversion – the simulator specifically turns the patient over;
  • hardware - pulling occurs under the influence of special loads;
  • dry – a variety of simulators are used for the procedure;
  • underwater – traction is carried out under water;
  • The autogravitational procedure is performed under the influence of the patient’s own weight.

The effect of this method is temporary. This is explained by the fact that when performing the procedure, the distance between the vertebrae increases, pinched nerves are released, blood circulation increases and, as a result, the pain goes away very quickly. After completing the course of traction, the vertebrae fall back into place and the pain may return.

This procedure will temporarily relieve you of the symptoms of a hernia, but it does not directly affect the disease itself. In addition, this can provoke additional hernias in the spine.

Apitherapy for spinal hernia

Apitherapy – treatment of spinal hernia with bee venom. Since some people may have a very strong allergic reaction to bee venom (up to anaphylactic shock), before treatment with bee venom it is necessary to do an allergy test!

Of all the procedures for introducing bee venom into the area of inflammation and hernia prolapse, the most effective is considered to be the direct impact of an insect sting on the pain points . The bee is taken with tweezers and applied with its abdomen to the sore spot. After stinging, after 15-20 seconds, the sting is removed and the bite site is treated with hydrocortisone ointment.

Treatment of hernia with massage

Roller massage

Massage with a wooden roller will help alleviate the patient's condition.
Prepare a paint roller or a round rolling pin from wood with a diameter of 4-5 cm and a length of 25-30 cm. Wrap it in a soft cloth so that it is not so hard. The massage is performed as follows:

  • lie on the floor, place a cushion under your lower back;
  • bend your legs at the knees, place your feet on the floor;
  • close your hands with a lock at the back of your head;
  • roll the roller all over your back 3 times, then relax your body and stretch;
  • perform the exercise 10 times.

After the massage, you can apply an anesthetic cream. After a few days, relief will come, and the hernia will eventually return to its place. With this rolling, the distance between the vertebrae increases and pain is eliminated.

Massage with a ball

To do this, you need to prepare a tennis ball or a similar rubber ball, which is sold in a sports store. Exercise strengthens the back muscles, restores tissue between the vertebrae, and increases blood circulation.

  1. lie on the floor, bend your legs, press your feet to the floor;
  2. place the ball under the lower back;
  3. adjust the force of pressure on the ball by raising and lowering the lower back;
  4. move your pelvis left and right, up and down from the neck to the tailbone;
  5. determine the number of repetitions and pressure force for yourself, start with 2-3 repetitions and gradually increase their number;
  6. if you massage the ball correctly, you will feel warmth in your back muscles;
  7. You can also perform exercises with the ball by pressing the ball with your back against the wall, while doing squats with your arms raised.

Massage with a ball will help relieve pain from a hernia.
It is very important to perform all exercises constantly. The positive effect appears within a week. If you experience discomfort or pain in your back, you should stop exercising.

Sabelnik and comfrey for spinal hernia

  1. Comfrey root.

The root collected before flowering is dried, crushed, and a mixture is made consisting of 150 grams of vodka, the same amount of pork fat, 70 grams of oleoresin and 500 grams of root. All this is ground and applied to sore spots, followed by wrapping in a warm cloth for 2-3 hours. The ointment is stored in the refrigerator; the shelf life is almost unlimited, provided the jar is sealed with an airtight lid. Before applying to the area, it is better to warm up a portion of the ointment.

  1. The root of the cinquefoil.

An ointment similar to comfrey ointment is made. In addition to the ointment, you can use a tincture of the root. To do this, pour 100 g of cinquefoil root into 0.5 liters of vodka and infuse for 3 weeks in a dark place. Take a teaspoon diluted in 50 ml of water three times a day before meals.
