Evening primrose oil: properties and uses

Peculiarities

Evening primrose has many alternative names: aspen, night violet, rapunzel. In the official classification, the plant is called evening primrose (Oenothera biennis), which is translated from Latin as “night candle.”

Most popular names also describe the peculiarity of the primrose vegetation, the flowers of which bloom at sunset and close with the onset of the next day. The plant received the name “oslinnik” for the shape of its leaves, which are very similar to the ears of an animal.

Botanical description

Evening primrose is a perennial herb belonging to the fireweed family. The height of an adult plant can reach 2 m, but is usually limited to 60–80 cm. At the same time, the thick, fleshy root at the base is buried in the ground no more than 20 cm. The erect stem, like all above-ground parts of the evening primrose, is densely pubescent with soft hairs.

In the first year after germination, a rosette of large leaves forms above the ground. The stem with flower stalks appears in the second season.

An inflorescence-brush is formed at the upper end of each shoot. Evening primrose has a bright, rich yellow color of its petals. There are also representatives of the species with white, blue and red buds. The roots and young leaves of the plant can be used as food, adding to soups and salads.

In the homeland of primrose, in North America, in the pre-Columbian era, the plant was considered a remedy for all diseases.

The flower came to Europe by the 17th century, and spread as an unusual garden plant and a powerful medicine. Today, evening primrose is found as a wild species and garden crop on all continents. From the European part of Russia to the Far East, the flower is widespread as a weed, grows along roads, and forms thickets along river banks.

What parts are used for medicinal purposes?

Evening primrose, the medicinal properties of which have been known since the culture of the North American Indians, was used entirely for medicinal purposes: from the roots to the very tops. Evening primrose leaves were used as food, medicines for the stomach and wounds were prepared from the seeds, and the flowers were brewed as a strengthening tea.

The basal leaves of the herbaceous plant are large, oval, tapering towards the petiole. The plates growing on the shoots are much smaller and have the shape of a narrow lancet. The leaves on the stems grow alternately, are without petioles and are framed along the edge with small teeth.

The upper part of the shoot is crowned with flower buds, which open alternately with the beginning of flowering, replacing the faded ones.

Evening primrose flowers are bisexual, large, reaching 5 cm in diameter. The bud is formed by 4 yellow petals, shaped like a heart. The ripening of numerous small seeds occurs unevenly from September until frost; they ripen in tetrahedral fruit boxes about 2 cm in size.

Collection

Medicinal raw materials should be collected away from highways and polluted urban environments. The green part of the spring primrose is cut off in the spring, before the flowers bloom. The top 10–15 cm of shoots have the best properties. Flowers are collected by plucking individual opening buds without damaging the raceme, or by a whole shoot with leaves and inflorescences.

It is more convenient to collect seeds from ripened capsules in early autumn. It is better to dig up the root of evening primrose after the entire above-ground part has withered, when preparing the flower bed for winter. If necessary, use the underground part, harvested in early spring. The roots acquire valuable properties only a year after planting; it is better to harvest them starting from the second season.

How to prepare

It is advisable to lay out whole shoots in the shade in the open air or hang them in small bunches to dry. Separately collected leaves and buds can be quickly dried by scattering the raw material in a thin layer on baking sheets covered with clean paper or cloth. You can obtain high-quality raw materials by heating the buds and leaves in the oven at a temperature of 100 °C.

The seeds are left in the boxes until the walls are completely dry. Unripe grains can reach the desired condition and become friable. After removing the seeds from the cases, they are dried again separately. The roots are laid out on cloth or paper and kept in the air for a long time, without access to direct sunlight.

You can speed up the process by placing the raw materials in the oven and drying them at a temperature not exceeding +40 °C.

When completely dry, the roots lose up to 80% of their mass, break, and do not spring back when bent. Evening primrose oil is obtained from the seeds by pressing. The process is labor-intensive and has a small yield of the finished product. Therefore, it is better to purchase primrose oil in pharmacies, where the product is subject to mandatory certification.

Storage

High-quality dried leaves and flowers can be packaged in glass containers with tight-fitting lids. The roots are stored well in thick paper bags or linen bags in a dry place. The liquid extract (oil) is kept in a dark, cool place; it is better to place it in the refrigerator.

Shelf life of medicinal raw materials from evening primrose:

  • leaves and flowers – 12 months;
  • roots – 24 months;
  • oil – 6 months;
  • capsules with extract (pharmacy) – 24 months.

If there are any signs of damage to the raw material (change in color, smell, consistency), primrose cannot be used for treatment.

Evening primrose: oil

By far the most important raw material obtained from evening primrose is oil. It contains the bulk of the beneficial substances that this plant is so rich in. Primrose oil is obtained from the seeds by cold pressing. Thus, all the value is retained in it. It is worth saying that, although the output of oil is quite a lot, the seeds themselves are not so easy to obtain, which is why its cost is so high. The peculiarity of evening primrose oil is that, in comparison with other vegetable oils, such as olive or linseed oil, it has a minimal content of oleic acid and at the same time is very rich in linoleic acid (up to 80% of the total content) and various types of linolenic acid. In general, in terms of characteristics primrose oil is very close to fish oil, not only in composition, but also in smell and color. As a rule, it is used very rarely in concentrated form. In most cases, it is used in a mixture with a base oil that has suitable characteristics.

Chemical composition

Evening primrose exhibits medicinal properties in accordance with its unique composition, the main components of which are gamma-linolenic (Omega-3) and linoleic (Omega-6) acids. The oil from the seeds of the plant is richest in polyunsaturated fatty acids. The remaining parts of the primrose contain valuable fats in lower concentrations, but have a lot of other useful components.

Components of evening primrose oil and their main properties:

Primrose oil contains plant estrogens, which provide the plant with medicinal value for the female body.

Green parts, flowers, roots have the following valuable substances:

  • vitamin C;
  • quercetin, campferol and their compounds;
  • tannins;
  • micro- and macroelements: sodium, magnesium, potassium, manganese, copper, iron, zinc, selenium;

(From Arabic Natural Medicine Sources)

The countries of the Arab Maghreb (Morocco and Algeria), those lands of North Africa where the peoples of the Semitic-Hamitic language groups, the Arab and related Berber peoples of the ancient Libyans, Getulians and Maurusians lived for thousands of years are considered the homeland of these plants. In ancient times, these lands were very fertile and distinguished by their plant diversity, and even now, these places amaze with the richness of plant species that are of great benefit to humanity, helping them treat their ailments and diseases. One such important plant is the Berber “tree of life”, the “iron tree”, known to us as argan...

The argan tree, which produces fruit only once every two years, has become a very rare plant and one of the most valuable, both for local residents and for us - the inhabitants of the rest of the Earth. Argan oil contains the highest content of vitamin E (in terms of the content of this “vitamin of youth”, argan oil is 3 times higher than olive oil), carotenoids (precursors of vitamin A), oleic fatty acid (Omega-9) (40-60%) and linoleic acid ( Omega-6) fatty acid (28-36%). Argan oil contains other fatty acids (palmitic acid - 13-16%, stearic acid 6-8%), ferulic acid, polyphenols, phytosterols, triterpene alcohols, as well as the powerful natural antioxidant squalene.

Contains argan oil

there is a complex of substances (its components are vitamin E, Omega-6 and Omega-9 fatty acids, ferulic acid), which helps restore normal blood pressure and heart rhythm, reduce cholesterol in the blood, improves the rheological properties of blood (viscosity and mechanics) and prevents the development of inflammatory processes in the heart and blood vessels. That is why regular consumption of argan oil can be recommended for the prevention and as part of complex treatment of atherosclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, arterial hypertension, coronary heart disease, thrombosis, thrombophlebitis and varicose veins.

Argan oil contains anti-inflammatory carotenoids, vitamin E, polyphenols, phytosterols and polyunsaturated fatty acids, and also contains squalene and ferulic acid, which have a bactericidal effect. Triterpene alcohols contained in argan oil are also active in the fight against pathogenic bacteria, viruses and fungi.

Argan oil

is a powerful source of antioxidants that help strengthen immune defense and are very active in the fight against free radicals that provoke premature aging and the development of cancer (antioxidants of argan oil include vitamin E, Omega-6 and Omega-9 fatty acids, squalene, polyphenols, ferulic acid ). According to recent studies, Omega-9 oleic acid, which argan oil is especially rich in, can suppress the growth of cancer cells in breast, stomach and intestinal cancers.

Vitamin E and carotenoids contained in significant quantities in argan oil play an important role in the functioning of the reproductive system (in particular, these substances take an active part in spermatogenesis, as well as in the natural synthesis of female and male sex hormones).

The Omega-6 and Omega-9 fatty acids, vitamin E and carotenoids contained in argan oil have a beneficial effect on the functional state of the visual system, preventing the development of diseases such as xerophthalmia, blepharitis, blepharoconjunctivitis, night blindness (hemeralopia), cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration (macular degeneration of the retina).

Argan oil helps improve the utilization of dietary glucose and increase the natural production of insulin by the pancreas, helping those who suffer from obesity or type 1 diabetes. It improves the functional state of the liver and gastrointestinal tract and is especially useful for women during menopause.

Argan oil

It is also particularly effective as an adjuvant in the complex treatment of various infectious and inflammatory diseases.

Evening primrose is called “night candle” because of the amazing property of flowers to bloom in the evening and at night; during the day, flowers bloom only in cloudy weather. 80% of the unique oil product consists of gamma-linolenic acid. In the human body, this substance promotes the synthesis of testosterone. The effect of the hormone is manifested in reducing the level of irritation and suppressing certain types of painful sensations. In addition, the following beneficial acids were found in evening primrose oil:

  • Eicosene. Reduces cholesterol levels and strengthens the immune system.

Advice If possible, you should start breeding evening primrose yourself. It is not very picky about its conditions and regularly blooms with beautiful yellow flowers. They are edible and no less useful than butter. Primrose flowers can even be used in vegetable or fruit salads.

  • Palmitic. Improves the condition of hair and nails, helps maintain water balance in tissues.
  • Oleic. Prevents the development of cancer by neutralizing free radicals and suspicious cells.
  • Stearic. Increases local immunity and permeability of mucous membranes, which allows beneficial substances to be more actively absorbed by tissues.

Evening primrose oil contains many more chemical compounds that underlie its therapeutic effect on the body. They act separately and in combination, but none of the remaining components accumulate in tissues, posing a health hazard. But the deficiency of these substances manifests itself very quickly. It all starts with aesthetic defects, for example, excessive dry skin, and leads to serious problems with internal organs.
