Icelandic moss (cetraria): photo of the plant

Icelandic moss: medicinal properties, indications and contraindications

Icelandic moss is a lichen whose thallus is attached to a tree or ground with its rhizoids. The height of the bush is about 12-15 cm. Regarding the color palette, the plant has a brown-green thallus, green on top, brown below.

The medicinal qualities of moss have been known for a long time. Medicine has recognized the plant as suitable for curing all kinds of ailments, especially colds and the consequences of a cold.

One of the optimal herbal antibiotics that significantly improves immunity is Icelandic moss. It contains 70% mucus, organic acid, which has an antibacterial effect on the body.

In addition, due to the special type of sodium found in the plant, it is used in the treatment of tuberculosis.

Today, moss is used in official medicine - to make medicines, and in folk medicine - to prepare ointments and tinctures. In pharmacies you can see dried moss leaves or preparations based on it.

Iceland moss

The healing effect is explained by the rich chemical composition of the plant. In popular medicine, its antibacterial qualities are valued. The composition, rich in vitamins and microelements, contributes to:

  • strengthening the immune system
  • reducing inflammation of the mucous membrane during colds or gastrointestinal problems
  • reducing cough symptoms
  • improve digestion
  • active use in the treatment of whooping cough

A course of treatment with herbal tinctures will also help cure sinusitis, ulcers, acne on the face, influenza, and ARVI. Thanks to the antibacterial properties, moss-based ointments are used to treat scratches and cuts.

No side effects were found during use. Preparations based on Icelandic moss are considered absolutely safe.

Icelandic moss is a great help for colds

The exceptions are autoimmune diseases and pregnancy, in these cases you should still consult a doctor. And if, after consulting with a doctor, there are no contraindications to the use of drugs, then moss will help you.

Chemical composition

You can understand why lichen has healing properties by carefully studying its chemical composition. It has been established that plant tissues contain elements that exhibit biological activity. Most often, aqueous preparations are prepared from it, since this method of processing Icelandic moss promotes the active transition of glucose, carbohydrates and nutrients into the liquid.

The high nutritional value of cetraria is also explained from a scientific point of view: the thallus contains approximately 80% polysaccharides. At the same time, the use of the plant noticeably improves peristalsis and the condition of the gastrointestinal mucosa, which is explained by the presence of chitin in it, which exhibits the qualities of a sorbent.

The bitter taste of Icelandic moss is the result of the presence of lichen organic acids in its tissues.

In particular, it is usnic acid, a natural antioxidant that has a high antibacterial and antimicrobial effect. It is its presence in cetraria that makes it possible to use the plant for the treatment of tuberculosis and other diseases caused by the activity of gram-positive bacteria. The plant also contains mucus, proteins, natural wax, gum, triterpenes, vitamins, a number of trace elements and naphthoquinone.

Beneficial properties of Icelandic moss

The chemical composition of the lichen also determines the healing properties of Icelandic moss. (In this part of my story I will use this name more often, since it has become a kind of “trademark” of the lichen).

Traditional medicine has used Icelandic moss for a long time. Of course, its names were different in different areas - lopastyanka, dry boar moss and others. They treated bronchitis, other colds, and various inflammatory processes of the gastrointestinal tract. Cetraria preparations helped in healing purulent wounds, burns, and frostbite.

This is what it is - Icelandic moss lichen

The verdict of “scientific medicine” of the 19th century was harsh - there can be no talk of any medicinal value of Icelandic moss! After all, scientists did not find any alkaloids or glycosides in its composition. So everything went as usual: the doctors treated, the doctors accused them of ignorance.

And yet... Tuberculosis (consumption) was one of the most terrible diseases of that time (it seems, however, that everything is coming back...). Medicine simply gave in to the disease. But infusions from Icelandic moss... raised the sick to their feet!

Serious studies have shown that the antimicrobial effect in lichen is primarily exerted by usnic acid, a strong natural antibiotic. Yes, and this lichen substance has an antiviral effect. In modern medicine, the sodium salt of usnic acid is mainly used - sodium usninate.

The bitter substance cetrarin has an enveloping effect and also helps improve appetite.

Lichen starch lichenin turned out to be very nutritious and easily digestible. It turned out that it was not for nothing that “ignorant” healers used jelly from Icelandic moss to restore the strength of exhausted patients.

Lichen decoctions cure various diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, especially gastritis. Helps with heartburn and diarrhea.

And yet, the healing value of lichen is especially great in the treatment of bronchitis, asthma, and tuberculosis. Apparently, in addition to the antibiotic effect, infusions from Icelandic moss also strengthen the immune system.

Purulent wounds can be treated with a decoction of lichen or its alcohol tincture. The cooled broth cleanses the skin well and helps in the fight against acne. Modern cosmetology also widely uses usnic acid.

And you can simply use Icelandic moss for food! Which, by the way, was done by the inhabitants of the North many centuries ago. In Iceland, as well as in other Scandinavian countries, Cetraria lichen was used in baking bread - it was added to flour. Icelandic moss was used to make jelly and jellied meat - the decoction becomes gelatinous as it cools.

Icelandic moss can also help out in difficult situations. For example, a mushroom picker, berry picker, or tourist lost in the forest may well be supported by this lichen - he just needs to be doused with boiling water. Or add water, boil, let sit for ten minutes and eat.

Like lichens of the genus Cladonia, Icelandic cetraria is included in the diet of reindeer.

Icelandic cetraria should be collected in the summer, in dry weather. After collection, the lichen must be cleared of debris and dried. When drying, you should monitor the weather - do not forget, lichen is able to perfectly absorb water from the air. It must also be stored in a dry place.

When collecting Icelandic moss, be sure to take into account that its annual growth is extremely small - only 1 - 2 mm per year! You never need to collect all the jacket you find. Be sure to leave some of the lichen for further growth.

Decoction and infusion of Icelandic moss

Decoctions of Icelandic moss are used to treat gastritis, normalize intestinal function, treat wounds, and cleanse the skin.

To obtain a decoction, pour the lichen with cold water (at the rate of 1 tablespoon per glass of water), boil for 30 minutes, and filter. Drink half a glass 3 times a day.

Infusions of Icelandic moss help with bronchopulmonary diseases, including chronic bronchitis, asthma, and tuberculosis.

Get the infusion like this. Pour two teaspoons of lichen into a glass of boiling water and leave for half an hour. You should drink on an empty stomach, before meals, 1 - 2 tablespoons 5 - 6 times a day.

For the treatment of bronchopulmonary diseases, an infusion of Icelandic moss in milk (preferably goat's) is also used. You need to boil a glass of milk and add a teaspoon of ground lichen into it. The milk will turn green. To soften the bitterness, you can add honey. After this, let it brew and drink.

However, please remember: Self-medication is dangerous! You should always be treated under the supervision of a specialist!

Although... If winter for you is a time of constant colds, bronchitis, coughs, brew a tablespoon of Icelandic moss in a thermos. And take two tablespoons on an empty stomach 3-4 times a day.

The wonderful lichen Cetraria Icelandica brings many benefits to humans. But the lichen itself requires careful treatment. Of course, the reserves of Icelandic moss are quite large. But they are not at all limitless.

By the way, Icelandic Cetraria does not grow in polluted air. This lichen serves as one of the indicators of the ecological cleanliness of the area.

How to brew Icelandic moss to treat bronchitis?

It has been noted that Icelandic moss promotes a speedy recovery from bronchitis. For this:

  • pour 1 tbsp of dried moss into a glass of milk.

Use in folk medicine

In alternative medicine, many recipes have been compiled in which the main component is Icelandic moss. Moreover, depending on the type of disease, the technology for preparing the product and its type differ.

methods of preparing cetraria for medicinal purposes are distinguished

  • Infusion on water - 15 - 20 g of dry lichen is poured with cold water, boiled over a fire and taken cooled and strained. The second method of preparing the infusion is reminiscent of the method of brewing tea (a pinch of raw materials per glass of boiling water);
  • Mucus decoction - two tablespoons of crushed dried plant are poured into a pan, cold water is added in a volume of 1 liter. The product is boiled over low heat for an hour and a half, then filtered while hot and left to sit under the lid. The finished decoction of Icelandic moss has a slimy consistency and can be stored in the refrigerator for 48 hours;
  • Alcohol tincture - pour three tablespoons of dry moss with a glass of medical alcohol, leave in a dark, cool place for a week. Take 10-15 drops per spoon of water or drop the tincture onto a piece of sugar and hold it in your mouth.

Icelandic moss is also used to make compresses, ointments and healing creams. The basis is usually vegetable oil or any neutral cream (for children, for example), into which crushed lichen is mixed. However, pharmacies sell ready-made cosmetics with cetraria, so this method of use is not very popular.

For cough and bronchitis

For acute respiratory diseases accompanied by a severe cough and bronchitis, herbal decoctions can quickly bring relief. Icelandic moss is no exception. To prevent the bitter taste of the infusion from becoming an obstacle to its use, it is better to prepare the product with milk.

To begin, pour 10 g of dried cetraria into an enamel pan. Pour cold milk into it (one glass is enough). Bring to a boil and reduce heat, continuing to simmer the broth for another 30 minutes under the lid. Strain the milk and cool. You should drink a decoction of Icelandic moss at night, before going to bed. When taking mucolytic drugs and expectorants in parallel, you should consult with the doctor who prescribed the treatment about the possibility of combining medications.

For tuberculosis

With an infectious disease of the pulmonary system provoked by mycobacteria, the body weakens significantly. To restore its protective functions and general tone, a medicinal infusion of Icelandic moss is used. It is prepared in a standard way, but the process of treating the disease largely depends on the method of administration. 20 g of dried crushed Icelandic cetraria is poured with a glass of boiling water and left under the lid for 1.5 - 2 hours.

After cooling, strain the product and drink before meals. The dosage for adults is three tablespoons; children are given a significantly smaller portion (1 teaspoon). The course of treatment lasts 30 days, after which there is a break for 2 weeks. To monitor your condition, visit your pulmonologist regularly and report your symptoms and progress of the disease.

For gastrointestinal diseases

Disruption of the gastrointestinal tract is accompanied by such serious symptoms as dyspepsia, spasms and pain, loss of appetite, and stool upset. When gastritis or an ulcer is diagnosed, the affected mucous membrane of the walls of the gastrointestinal tract (stomach or duodenum) becomes covered with ulcerations. Against this background, the digestion process becomes significantly more difficult, since the patient experiences constant pain with each meal and/or in the intervals between them. During such periods, he needs light, nutritious food that saturates the body and is quickly digested without loading the stomach.

One of the options could be the following folk recipe: grind a glass of dried lichen in a blender and mix with muesli (take natural flakes without additives). The resulting mixture is poured with low-fat kefir or milk and left for 1.5 - 2 hours. It is better to eat it instead of breakfast or as an afternoon snack. Before eating, heat the dish in the microwave for 10–20 seconds so as not to eat it cold: a sick stomach does not tolerate temperature “jumps” well.

With a runny nose

Excessive secretion of muconasal secretions during a cold or allergy, which is accompanied by inflammation of the nasal mucosa, causes a person great discomfort. A runny nose that lasts several days aggravates the course of the disease and itself becomes a serious problem.

To eliminate it, try steam inhalation using a decoction of cetraria. Throw a pinch of Icelandic moss into a pan of boiling water and wait until it acquires its characteristic color. Cool the liquid slightly, otherwise the strong steam will burn the mucous membrane. Tilt your head over the water and cover yourself with a towel. Inhale the steam from the decoction through your nose for 7 to 10 minutes. Do not pour it out: the decoction can be used 2 more times - a total of three inhalations will be needed per day. Additionally, the mucous membrane can be washed with a warm infusion of the plant.

For the thyroid gland

Iodine contained in live cetraria has a positive effect on the function of the thyroid gland in diseases caused by a lack of microelement in the body. To prepare a remedy based on Icelandic moss to improve thyroid function, you will need natural yogurt without additives (250 ml). Add the crushed plant (20 g) and a small amount of linden honey to it. Mix in a blender and let it brew for a quarter of an hour.

Prepared yogurt will replace one of your daily snacks or be a healthy alternative to dinner. You can take the product every day or every other day. First, ask the endocrinologist you are seeing whether he approves of such treatment, taking into account the individual characteristics of your body.

For dysbacteriosis

Thallus lichen contains a large amount of carbohydrates and is considered an excellent nutritional element for the cultivation of beneficial microflora in the large intestine. Dysbacteriosis, provoked by antibiotics or infections (bacterial or viral), responds well to treatment with natural remedies prepared from cetraria.

For dysbacteriosis, it is useful to drink an infusion of moss with cold water or kefir, but it is even better to use jelly based on lichen.

It is prepared simply: 20 - 30 g of the crushed plant is poured with cold water (200 ml) and brought to a boil. Then the mixture is simmered over low heat with constant stirring for about 10 minutes. After it is cooled, ground through a sieve and left in a cool place for a couple of hours. The product should acquire a jelly consistency. Eaten in small portions before each meal (15-25 minutes).

For constipation

Constipation, accompanied by slow, difficult or systematically insufficient bowel movement, is not a disease, but a symptom of many diseases. For quick and painless cleansing of the body, an infusion based on Icelandic moss is used. A glass of lichen is crushed using a meat grinder and filled with cold water (2 liters will be needed). The product is infused for 24 hours. A day later, add another liter of water to it and take 200 ml 30 minutes before meals. Usually the effect occurs within the first day, but the course of treatment is continued for another 2 weeks.

For cancer

The use of cetraria for the treatment of diseases in the presence of malignant neoplasms may be approved as an additional therapy. It is known that in some cases, decoctions and infusions based on lichen have a protective effect against the side effects of medications used in chemotherapy.

However, Icelandic moss is not a cure for cancer. It activates the body's protective functions and provides a comprehensive preventive effect.

To increase immunity and generally strengthen the functions of the main body systems, the following recipes are used:

  • A teaspoon of dried cetraria is poured with boiling water (200 ml) and left for 10 minutes. Drink warm or hot instead of tea for a month (then you need a week's break);
  • Stir two tablespoons of lichen in boiling milk and cook over low heat for 15 minutes, then let sit covered for another half hour. Drink a few sips before each meal and at night. The course of prophylaxis is 2 weeks with a break of 7 days and resumption of treatment.

The plant, known as Icelandic moss, is used in 90% of cases as a component of herbal preparations for the treatment of cancer. Other ingredients are usually bee products, St. John's wort, etc.

For weight loss

To get rid of fat around your waist and achieve your dream figure, you need to be physically active and eat a healthy diet. A decoction with cetraria will help speed up the process. A pinch of Icelandic moss added to regular tea also helps increase metabolism, but it is better to drink a ready-made decoction. When used, this drink gives a complex effect, including activation of intestinal motility and regulation of natural bowel movements.

To prepare the remedy, take a tablespoon of crushed dry raw materials and pour 200 ml of boiling water. The infused decoction is drunk three times a day before each meal. You should not continue to use the plant for more than 3 months, otherwise addiction will occur.
