Immortelle is a perennial herb from the Asteraceae family. The plant is widespread in Central Asia and Europe, in areas with low-moisture sandy and rocky soil. You can meet it in meadows, young spruce forests, light forests, steppes, semi-deserts, and on hillsides. Flowers are able to retain color and not fall off for several months after cutting.

Other names for the perennial are straw blossom, tsmin, goldenwort, cat's paws, yellowwort. About 600 plant species have been discovered, but 3 are widely known:

  1. Sandy immortelle. Up to 40 cm long, it has yellow inflorescences in the shape of baskets, collected in dense shields (see photo).
  2. Immortelle meadow. It has a thin branched stem covered with elongated leaves. The flowers are pink or purple.
  3. Immortelle is big. Grown to decorate flower beds in gardens, it has large bright buds of different shades - yellow, white, red, orange. Blooms before frost.

Sandy immortelle: beneficial, medicinal properties and contraindications

Due to the sunny yellow hue of the flowers, popular rumor attributed healing properties to the golden flower in the treatment of jaundice (hepatitis). Surprisingly, this information later completely coincided with scientific data. The plant is mainly used to stimulate the stomach, treat the liver and as an effective choleretic agent. Immortelle herb is also used for:

  • gastritis
  • cholecystitis
  • atherosclerosis
  • cholelithiasis
  • inflammation of the kidneys and bladder
  • gynecological diseases as a hemostatic agent (for example, for uterine bleeding)
  • high cholesterol
  • coronary heart disease

  • lipid metabolism disorder
  • nervous diseases and stress
  • helminthic infestation

In addition, sandy cinnamon has mucolytic, analgesic, antispasmodic and diaphoretic effects. Stabilizes the heart, cleanses the blood, improves the functioning of the digestive tract. To decide how to take immortelle correctly and how much to drink for a particular illness, below are detailed recipes for medicines based on it.

Contraindications

Do not forget that, like any medicinal product, immortelle herb not only has medicinal properties, but also has contraindications for use. These include:

  • hypertension: due to the ability to increase blood pressure, the drug is not recommended for hypertensive patients, or is allowed to be used with caution in courses of no more than 3-5 days;
  • tendency to thrombophlebitis: this drug increases the rate of platelet formation and, accordingly, blood clotting;
  • pregnancy: the property of the collection to thicken the blood and increase blood pressure gives reason not to recommend sandy immortelle during pregnancy;
  • increased acidity of the stomach, especially against the background of gastritis: sandy cinnamon promotes the active secretion of gastric juice, the increased acidity of which increases the risk of erosive and ulcerative diseases of the digestive tract;
  • long-term use: can provoke constant tone of the hepatic veins with their expansion and subsequent stagnation of blood in certain areas of the liver;
  • obstructive jaundice: with this disease, the bile passages for the outflow of bile do not function properly, so taking the drug will only cause a sharp exacerbation of the disease.

Considering the contraindications for use, it is recommended to take immortelle in courses of 12-14 days with breaks of 2-2.5 months, no more than 2-3 times a year.

Contraindications and possible harm

    Immortelle is contraindicated for:
  • Allergies to the flower or intolerance to one of the components.
  • Pathology accompanied by blockage of the bile ducts. The plant activates the release of bile: the patient’s condition may worsen.
  • Hypertension. Immortelle stimulates increased blood pressure.

If urolithiasis worsens, taking herbal remedies should be suspended. The grass provokes urine output and activation of stones. This creates additional stress on the kidneys and increases the risk of blockage of the ducts of the excretory system. They drink it without a break for up to 3 months, following the regimen and dosage depending on the disease.

The maximum daily amount depends on the type of product. Infusions and teas are prescribed up to 4 glasses, decoctions - from 3 tablespoons to 400 ml per day.

Pregnant and lactating

It is not recommended to take immortelle during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The active components of the plant can have a toxic effect on the fetus, cause allergies, or provoke disruption of the gastrointestinal tract and excretory system in the baby. Exceptions are conditions in which the plant can replace drugs with a large number of side effects:

  • diabetes;
  • risk of uterine bleeding;
  • violation of biliary excretion;
  • initial stage of cholelithiasis.

The decision about the possibility of using the herb is made by the attending physician. It will help analyze the ratio of benefits and harms of immortelle, and calculate a treatment regimen that is safe for women and children.

Contraindications

Despite the undoubted benefits, there are prohibitions and restrictions on the use of immortelle and products based on it. These include individual intolerance, pregnancy and breastfeeding, cholelithiasis, gastritis, pancreatitis, increased acidity of gastric juice, jaundice, gastric and duodenal ulcers, thrombophlebitis, childhood, hypertension.

But even in the absence of obvious contraindications, before taking cumin-based products and preparations, you should consult a doctor. In addition, they cannot be used for a long time and without interruption, this can cause congestion in the liver.

Is it possible for children

Infusions and decoctions of immortelle are not recommended for children under 12 years of age. The drugs are given from 1 year of age in a dosage appropriate to age. Herbal remedies are prescribed during complex therapy of such diseases:

  • biliary dyskinesia;
  • cholecystitis;
  • hepatitis;
  • inflammation of liver tissue;
  • helminthiasis

When to collect, how to dry

Immortelle blooms buds from June until autumn. It is better to collect raw materials from secondary flowering: it contains more useful substances. Preparation diagram:

  1. In June, we remove the first buds from the plants. We are waiting for the appearance of other inflorescences that should form at the cutting sites.
  2. We collect raw materials until the buds are fully opened. For the procedure, we select the day on the eve of which there was dry weather.
  3. Cut off the inflorescences with stems 1 cm long.
  4. We lay out the collected raw materials in one layer on a flat surface outdoors under a canopy or in a room with good ventilation.
  5. Dry for 7–9 days.

Properly prepared flowers look fresh. The collection is stored for up to a year in canvas bags. The period is limited to this period, since at home it will not be possible to hermetically pack the workpieces. The medicinal properties of immortelle are decreasing, so its use is ineffective.

Features of brewing tea

The grass should not be poured with boiling water. Under the influence of high temperature, some useful compounds decompose.

Brew immortelle tea as follows:

  • pour 2 tablespoons of flowers into a thermos;
  • pour 400 ml of water heated to 70 degrees;
  • close the container tightly;
  • Infuse tea for 30 minutes.

Strain the drink before drinking. A properly prepared decoction is transparent, yellow in color with a bitter aftertaste.

What herbs does it go with?

The medicinal properties of drinks made from immortelle or sandy cumin can be enhanced with other components.

  1. St. John's wort. Enhances the antibacterial, sedative, anthelmintic properties of flowers.

  5. Oregano. Stimulates the restoration of liver cells, has an expectorant effect.
  6. Chicory. Increases the antimicrobial activity of flowers. Used in the treatment of tuberculosis.

Types of healing compounds

Depending on the method of preparation, medicinal products receive different concentrations of useful substances and the strength of their effect on the human body. Composition recipes:

  1. Infusion. Take 1 tablespoon of flowers, pour into a thermos, pour 1 glass of water. If the liquid is at room temperature, leave for 8 hours; when heated to 70 degrees, leave for 2 hours.
